What is Pilates?
Pilates strengthens the muscles that support the spine (the neck, shoulders, abs, hips and thighs) to bring balance into the body. Most body aches and pains are due to muscular imbalance. Pilates helps to realign the spine in order to decrease tension, increase flexibility, and strengthen the body from the inside out.

Mat Work
Some instructors are trained only with mat exercise, which is the essence of Pilates. Mat work can be extremely effective, if your instructor is properly trained. Pilates was initially developed to be used primarily on the mat, but Joseph Pilates realized that many of us were not strong enough to perform the movements and created the machines to supplement the mat work. |
Reformer
This apparatus is one of the primary machines used in Pilates workouts. It resembles a bed, where it lies on the floor and has a thick padding for comfort. Attached are springs, used for resistance training. These springs simulate real life movement and range from 0 to 25 lbs.

Other Equipment
The wunda chair, Cadillac barrels, and the tower help to isolate various muscles while promoting balance and elongation of the spine. All of the Pilates equipment should be used only when the instructor is fully trained by an approved Institute |
